Hi! We’re the Turrells.

We’re citizens of the world. I was born in North Carolina, raised in Japan by a Marine father and Japanese mother before moving on to Hawaii and Florida. My husband, Paul, was born and raised in Kington, a tiny market village on the border of England and Wales. Our children, Tai and Jei, have dual nationality and a ton of stories between the pages of their British and U.S. passports. Tai’s a gamer and credits gaming with teaching him strategic thinking, working with a team, cooperation and collaboration. Jei’s a shark attack survivor and credits his run-in with the shark in teaching him resilience, overcoming fear, as well as learning a ton about shark attacks and what cause them. Not to mention giving him a killer story and scar.

We believe there are two gifts we should give our children: one is roots. The other is wings.

We don’t believe in having to choose between planting roots and growing wings.

We occasionally root down and ground out in our cabin in the woods on ancestral land in a tiny rural SC town with a population of 517.

But we have wanderlust in our souls and we grow restless when we stay still in one little corner of the earth for long. It’s a big, beautiful world and we want to go out and see it, breathe it, really live in it. We’ve always got our passports ready for the next adventure.

We’re open minded. We like to stay out of the box. Or get rid of the box altogether. For the most part, we like to take the road less traveled. Whatever road we take, the road and the world are our teachers.

We believe we have something to learn from ancient traditions and different cultures. We also have something to teach. We love how travel reminds us how much we really all have in common. I love how travel makes me feel tiny, humble and inspired. I particularly love how travelling helps me zoom out and see the bigger picture – no matter what I’m looking at.

When we had kids, we refused to hang up the backpacks and hiking shoes. We just got bigger backpacks and a couple more pairs of hiking shoes. We love to try new things, see the world from new perspectives, eat new foods, meet new people.

We’re serial entrepreneurs. If we had resumes, they might read: “Jointly and wildly successfully launched a startup business that was named Inc 5000 Honoree – twice! The most recent endeavor was featured in Inc 500 at number 209 of America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies.” We erased those resume files long ago to create space for a life of adventure. We sold our location-dependent business to chase freedom and fulfill our wanderlust. But as much as wanderlust is in our souls, entrepreneurship is in our blood so we launched a location independent data company and joined the ranks of globe trotting digital nomads. Not only is the world our teacher. It’s also our office.
